Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) is a form of martial arts and self-defense. BJJ is also a sport, and a means of keeping physically fit as well as a way of life. In accordance with any type of sport, there is a standard uniform. The basics consist of a gi complete with belt. Patches are also worn to show the academy to which the person belongs.

While the belt indicates the level of accomplishment of its wearer, the jiu jitsu patches perform another function. They are a form of advertisement and act to differentiate the individuals who appear in competition and other sporting or demonstration events. In BJJ the patches can also indicate more than a club. In many tournaments, competitors wear patches that show their sponsorship and affiliation.

What are Jiu Jitsu Patches?

There is no mystery about a Brazilian jiu jitsu patch. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes but most tend to be circular in form.

If you go online, you will see three basic forms of composition. They are:

* Embroidered
* Woven
* Printed

You can also find Chenille patches and those that have been sublimated. As is generally the case, the prices for patches can range wildly across the board. Some patch makers can create what you want from a simple drawing you submit, or any basic artwork.

Once you get your patches representing your club and affiliate organization, it then becomes a question of where to put it.

Proper Placement of Jiu Jitsu Patches

You cannot place your patches simply wherever you feel like putting them. There are rules. In fact, according to the regulations of the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation, you can only position the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Patches on 13 designated sections of the gi. The IBJJFF provides a list on their website

This rule is loosely enforced as many high level black belts compete with patches from sponsors attached to many other places on their gis. Those on the jacket of the gi should be positioned on the following places:

* Upper left arm and shoulder
* Front right upper arm and shoulder
* At the front just below the belt
* At the back just below the belt
* On the back but below the collar and above the belt
When it comes to the pants, you also have several options. You can place patches
* Above the right and/or left front knee
* Below the front left or right knee but it must be not interfere with “grabbing”
* Along the back of either the left or right leg

In general, you will find many gis decorated with a variety and fair amount of jiu jitsu patches. Yet, before you go all out and purchase a bunch of patches, make sure it conforms to your academy’s style and rules. This will save you money, time and embarrassment.
