A dental implant is given to a patient when they are in need of a tooth replacement. It is a prosthetic tooth that is designed to be nearly indistinguishable from your natural teeth. It is the perfect solution for people that have to have a tooth removed or pulled and do not want to live with a gap in their smile where their tooth use to be.

Parts of a Dental Implant

There are two parts to a tooth, the crown and the root. There are three parts to a dental implant, the implant itself, the abutment, and the crown. In this procedure, the crown and the root are extracted and are replaced with a prosthetic matching tooth and a screw that serves as the “root” of the tooth. The screw is there to hold the tooth in place and prevent it from moving or falling out in the future.

The implant is what we call the screw itself, as this is the portion that is being implanted into the patient’s mouth. The crown is the part of the implant that will be visible, disguised as a matching tooth. The abutment is the portion that connects the crown and the implant together.

What Are They Made Of?

The screw of the implant is usually made of titanium. Titanium is strong, light and will not rust or cause any health issues over time. Titanium also allows the bone to fuse directly to it. This helps to lock the implant in place.

Osseointegration

Osseointegration is the process that occurs when the cells in the jaw bone attach to the titanium. It was discovered in the mid-1960’s and since then, titanium has been used in dental implants thanks to this discovery. Once the cells begin to attach to the titanium, the screw will lock in place. This will provide more stability to the implant. After this process takes place, it is usually not recommended that you remove the implant for any reason in the future. The implant is designed to remain in the patient’s mouth for the rest of their live.
