When a company is in the market for new platform scales, it can seem like there is an overwhelming and perhaps never ending list of possible models, styles and brands to choose from. While this is true, and there are a lot of options, it is fairly simple to narrow down the selection to a manageable number of three or four to do a detailed comparison.
To get that number down to a short list that works, the first step is to start to weed out the platform scales and the manufacturers that are not the right match for your needs. There are several factors to consider or compare as to what is a good match and what isn’t, but these three factors are critical to any comparison.
Weight Range
While it is easy to know the weight range that is necessary for the scale, it is essential to know the parameters of accurate use for the scale. In other words, is the weight range needed today likely to change, and if so would the platform scales under consideration still meet your needs.
Additionally, take the time to read the specs on the scale, paying close attention to the overload capacity of the scale. There are some top floor scales or platform scales that have up to a 150% or more of rated scale capacity as the overload capacity, providing a safety cushion if employee error or other issues occur.
Installation and Setup
Not all platform scales are designed to be user-friendly either in the installation and setup process or in use. There are also scales that are literally plug and play, ready for use with just the leveling of the deck and connecting the cable to your current system.
Some systems include full weightless calibration which can be done literally at the touch of a button. They even have their own diagnostic systems checks that will run automatically, limiting the risk of unplanned downtime. These same systems can also provide troubleshooting support through onboard technology to monitor changes in voltages and weight that may be the source of the weighing problems.
While reputation is at the bottom of this list, it should be the most important factor to consider. Look for a manufacturer and distributor of platform scales with a reputation in your industry as a top provider of reliable, efficient and accurate measurements in all types of demanding environments.
