When you’re scheduled for an MRI, you might think that it’s an invasive procedure or one that involves a lot of medical details that are time-consuming. However, MRI imaging usually doesn’t take long to complete and usually doesn’t require any preparation on your part. Here are a few details to keep in mind about this type of scan before you arrive at your appointment.

Noise

During the scan, you should expect some noise from the machine. You can wear earplugs to block out the noise if you feel that you won’t be able to tolerate it or if you’re sensitive to sounds. An open MRI is an option to talk about with your doctor that usually doesn’t have the loud noises that are associated with an enclosed machine.

Anxiety

If you don’t like being in enclosed areas, then an MRI could begin to cause your anxiety levels to increase. Fortunately, an open design offers the same medical results but without the tight space of a traditional machine. This can make you feel a bit more relaxed during the scan, which can sometimes mean that the scan is completed sooner than expected.

What Not to Take

There are a few things that you shouldn’t take to your MRI imaging appointment. Leave jewelry at home or with someone who goes with you to the imaging center. The magnets used during the scan can pick up on metallic objects that you wear. Let the technician know if you have any tattoos or if you have any permanent metal components in your body, such as a joint replacement.
