People’s fascination with Oriental furniture began centuries ago. Chinese furniture pieces are considered some of the most valuable and exquisite in the world. It is imperative to learn something about the way to ensure that you are getting an authentic piece of furniture rather than being scammed by a dishonest seller.

Why Chinese Furniture Remains Relevant Today

The exotic details typically found on various types of Oriental furniture can really be noticed on many finer Chinese furniture pieces. In the earliest beginnings of the making of Chinese styled furniture, the wood used was generally found in the Chinese provinces and was not usually painted or polished. Later, the Chinese furniture artisans began to incorporate ornate lacquering as finishes seen today in many authentic pieces in the later dynasty eras.

Look for Joinery Details in Asian Furniture

A quick way to check if a Chinese piece of furniture is truly an authentic antique is to inspect the joinery seen in drawers and other furniture joint components. If that joinery is found to be machine-cut, it would be dated after 1860 or thereabouts. Earlier antique pieces will not have this telltale sign. Other authentic older signs to look for are saw marks and other tool mars that could indicate if a furniture item was crafted by hand or with mechanical machinery. Handmade furniture often isn’t exactly symmetrical.

Know What You Have Before Refinishing or Selling

Once only available to the Chinese royal families, over time Chinese furniture became a hot trade commodity desired by foreigners from other lands. Never paint, refinish or sell an older piece of Oriental furniture without getting it appraised first.

Take time to research Oriental furnishings. Chinese furniture still strikes a chord with modern people groups, and this type of furnishing is considered timeless in beauty and decor.
