Within the last few years, social media apps like Instagram have taken the beauty industry by storm. Surprisingly, trends like vivid hair and the perfect brow have turned millions on to the idea of being a beauty guru. Many know this, but there’s a negative stigma around the number of women in the cosmetology industry. Surprisingly, the demand for fresh graduates from schools for cosmetology is nothing to bat an eyelash at.

Cosmetologists Outnumber Lawyers

According to BeautySchools.edu, there are almost two million cosmetologists, which vastly outnumbers the number of lawyers in the United States. You may think that because this number is so high there isn’t a need for any more, but the demand for cosmetologists is set to rise upwards of 20% by 2018. As more salons open because of this demand, more seats become available within the beauty shops.

The demand is driven by the growing population, as more students graduate from schools for cosmetology in Kansas City. It doesn’t stop at hair as the demand for manicurists is set to rise more than 18% while skin care specialists see an increase in demand as high as 40%. Because of this expectation, beauty schools can pump out successful talent consistently.

A Dime a Dozen or Supply and Demand?

In the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, there were just as many beauty students as there are today, but that number shrunk significantly when the ability to obtain an entry-level position became harder. Schools for cosmetology were not the problem. It was the lack of social media.

Social media may not seem like it has had that much of an impact but because of apps like Instagram, brands have been able to build themselves up from scratch and become noticed much more easily. As the spotlight is turned to new graduates, cosmetology positions are becoming occupied left and right.
