There are many reasons why a person may need the services of a rehabilitation treatment center. People who have been seriously injured, undergone extensive surgery or who have been hospitalized for a significant amount of time due to illness or coma will all need to go through rehabilitation. Rehabilitation treatment centers provide extended medical care in order to get the patients’ bodies restored to their natural working order. Therapies of both the physical and emotional nature are highly important medical fields that require specialized facilities and physicians. They are the last step before the patient re-enters society as a rehabilitated person capable of carrying out daily tasks and basically able to live life on their own independently.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is a process by which medical professionals guide the patient through a series of exercises and stretches in order to restore movement and mobility back to a certain area of the body. For example if a person is in a coma for an extended amount of time they experience muscular atrophy due to non-use. The person has awakened from the coma and is ready to rejoin society, but their muscles have diminished and cannot support the weight and movement of the body. In this case a therapist would assign certain medical devices for use until they regain mobility, and have them participate in different exercises in order to strengthen the muscles several times a week. Some rehabilitation centers offer extended stay programs where they will essentially live onsite until they get better.
Emotional Rehabilitation
Another type of rehabilitation treatment centers offers medical care for those that have mental trauma, suicidal tendencies or substance abuse. These facilities can either be voluntary or court appointed and specialized care is needed for each and every patient. The patients will live onsite and undergo detox if needed, counseling sessions and psychiatric evaluations. The ultimate goal is to have the patients re-enter society as contributing members with purpose in their lives. Addiction is a disease that must be treated and typically the patients will continue with outpatient programs for as long as it takes for them to be assured the addiction is gone. Suicidal patients need special attention and therapy sessions until a psychiatrist and the patient believe that they are no longer a threat to themselves. People with trauma such as a death or post-traumatic stress disorder due to combat need help coping with difficult situations so that they can move on with their lives.
