Fusion bond pipes come in many shapes and sizes. Compared to an ordinary pipe, these types of pipes are very different. For instance, the reason why it is known as a fusion bond piping is due to the fusion bonded epoxy coating on top. Commonly known as the FBE coating, it is applied on top of a conventional steel pipe.

When laying down a pipeline, it is important to protect the pipe from environmental factors. Fusion bonding is an excellent option. Basically, the coating is made of a thermoset polymer. Because of the fact that steel pipes tend to corrode so quickly, the epoxy coating improves its lifespan. The fusion epoxy is heat curable and offers robust resistance to corrosion.

Typically, the fusion bond pipe is used when placing pipelines underwater. When underwater, steel tends to corrode rapidly. However, if it is covered with an epoxy coating, the pipe remains protected. These pipes are also used commonly in the gas and oil industry.

Oil and gas pipelines are usually very long, often extending for many kilometers in one direction. Corrosion in any one section can compromise the whole pipeline. As a result, the pipes need to be very strong and sturdy. Fusion bonded pipes are an excellent choice in this regard. They can be placed above or under the ground, and can withstand environmental factors for many years.

How Are the Pipes Made?

Fusion bonded pipes are basically covered with a special coating, as previously mentioned. The coating is made from the following essential products:

* Resin;

* Curing agent;

* Color pigments;

* Extenders or fillers.

The curing agent and the resin are mixed together first. This creates the “binder.” However, the two can’t be mixed together without a proper setup. The powder coating is usually created in a separate manufacturing plant altogether. Once it has been manufactured, it is applied using a different method.

The Coating Process

Even though there are many types of steel pipes, each of them must pass through three primary stages during the coating process. The first step is cleaning, where the surface of the steel pipe is cleaned thoroughly. Next, the steel is heated up to a specific temperature that is recommended for FBE coating. Finally, the FBE coating is applied to the steel pipe and cured. Most companies that manufacture industrial pipes usually have their own manufacturing plants.

That’s simply because it helps with the changing demands. Some clients have very specific requirements regarding the grading of the barrel and the thickness of the pipe. Having a manufacturing plant makes it easy for the company to alter its product accordingly. On the other hand, many companies have established vast delivery networks in order to cater to their customer’s demands.
